Adoptable Pets in Florida

Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?

No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

Hi, 7-8 months ago someone left a box of kittens on my porch:) Guess what? I kept them. I already had 3 cats that I have rescued from the neighborhood that I live in so that put me at 5. I thought ok I can do this. Well, 8-9 weeks ago someone left ANOTHER box of kittens at my front door. Now I have 9!!! The two cats that are 7 months are sweethearts and are both females. Bandit is a medium-length-haired cat and Socks is short-haired. The 8-9 week old kittens are Soot (boy-solid black), Antonio (tony for short-boy-black and white), Coco (female-light brown) & last but not least Mittens (female-black and white) she looks like she is going to have long hair like Bandit does. I would keep the little rascals but I already have cats. Can someone please help me find a GOOD HOME for these sweet babies? I live in the New Port Richey FL. area. Please shoot me a text if you are interested or know someone that needs a companion. 863-934-6744 PLEASE HELP !!! THANKS !!!! :) :)

Hello, My elderly parents live in Holiday. They have a stray cat that they sometimes feed. His foot is badly injured and it's turning black, is there anywhere that he could be brought for no cost medical care and possibly a new home?

There is a stray cat by our villa's. It is black with white feet, very friendly. I have been told it appears to have been someone pet and has been neutered or spayed. I am not a cat person myself. The property management here doesnt want to get involved and find a home for the cat. I feel bad for it and would like someone to pick it up as soon as possible. I can help with that when you are ready. I live in the Hunters Ridge Dr. villa's off of Rancho Del Rio in New Port Richey. Mike

I have a grey-white 1-2 yr old kitty that showed up on my pool deck this month. I think she was an indoor kitty that someone dropped of possibly in our neighborhood of Gulf Harbors-New Port Richey because she cries and cries as if she is scared of the outdoors until I come out on the porch and sit with her..then she stops crying. I posted a Craigslist add in the "found pets" section with no replies. I have a 12 and 13 yr old cat and I've tried acclimating them to each other and that isn't working well. I believe this kitty may be pregnant or just full from me feeding her and I'm not sure which it is. I'm afraid someone may hurt her since she cries so loud unless she's on the porch with me or someone is around her. I feel so bad for this kitty I started sleeping on the couch where she could see me through the glass windows from the porch. Please call me if someone can help her at 321-480-2133 C - Tracy

A few weeks back we found a small dog that was both starved and abused. We have taken it in for a couple weeks now, but even though he has gained a little weight and has improved overall with energy levels, I feel he is still in much of care that we can not provide, I'm just looking for advise on what to do or where to take him without putting him backs out to roam the streets alone. Any advice would be welcomed at this point.

Please help me find homes for 2-3 month old kittens. The person who has them, says that they will feed them to the coyotes or alligators to get rid of them. Any help is appreciated. I have 4 cats and can't take them.

I have a stray cat in my yard that has been around since I moved in back in November. The cat had kittens 5 weeks ago and they are running everywhere. The mother is keeping me out of certain areas of my yard by hissing and running at me. I have never tried to or have harmed them. I have actually bought food and given water due to the fact she scrounges for food. I don't want to have any kind of animal killed so I am hoping for some kind of help in getting the 5 kittens and this stray cat a home. Please give me relief or suggestions. Thank you.

I am looking for a temporary home for my two cats who are brothers. I have had them for 14 years and will be moving to Maine in June of this year. My house was auctioned off on January 25, 2017 and I have recently found myself a home to rent, but no cats are allowed. My name is on a waiting list in Maine for senior housing which does allow cats. It breaks my heart to leave them, but unfortunately I have no choice. They are loveable and easy to care for. They are not street smart and I let them out for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. (my house is fenced in so they will not wonder) Once I am settled in Maine I will take them with me. It would be a god send if you could find a home for them. Sincerly, Rita Ouillette

I have an older cat that was running around in my neighborhood about a year ago. I took her in because of the torrential storms last July. I've tried to care for her, but I am a very busy single mother of two working two jobs and can no longer afford to care for the cat. She is diabetic and needs insulin shots and a special diet (medicine and food which I have and can initially supply). I don't want to have to drop her at a shelter and I need to find a loving person who will adopt her and care for her. She is very good, no aggression, very loving and relaxed. Beautiful cream and orange, and fluffy! If you have a big heart and can care for a special needs cat, please call Michelle (727) 834-8593 (leave a message). Thank you!

There is a beautiful grey cat, her mouth looks like a lion, she's maybe 5mths? I call her Sasha, she is homeless, someone found her with a collar, we can't find her owner as she's been around for about a month. She is litter trained, loves to sit on your lap and be petted, uses the scratching pad, eats well, and really wants to be part of a family. We have a cat they get along well, but my husband won't have 2 around so Sasha has to go. She would be great for a family. Please consider her if you are looking. I have many pics. :) 727-534-6543 Text or call

1. Feral Cat TNR Program

Many communities are embracing Trap, Neuter, Release programs (TNR) to improve animal welfare, reduce death rates, and meet obligations to public welfare.

2. High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter

Low cost, high volume spay/neuter will quickly lead to fewer animals entering the shelter system, allowing more resources to be allocated toward saving lives.

3. Rescue Groups

An adoption or transfer to a rescue group frees up scarce cage and kennel space, reduces expenses for feeding, cleaning, killing, and improves a community's rate of lifesaving. In an environment of millions of dogs and cats killed in shelters annually, rare is the circumstance in which a rescue group should be denied an animal.

4. Foster Care

Volunteer foster care is crucial to No Kill. Without it, saving lives is compromised. It is a low cost, and often no cost, way of increasing a shelter's capacity, improving public relations, increasing a shelter's public image, rehabilitating sick and injured or behaviorally challenged animals, and saving lives.

5. Comprehensive Adoption Programs

Adoptions are vital to an agency's lifesaving mission. The quantity and quality of shelter adoptions is in shelter management's hands, making lifesaving a direct function of shelter policies and practice. In fact, studies show people get their animals from shelters only 20% of the time. If shelters better promoted their animals and had adoption programs responsive to the needs of the community, including public access hours for working people, offsite adoptions, adoption incentives, and effective marketing, they could increase the number of homes available and replace killing with adoptions. Contrary to conventional wisdom, shelters can adopt their way out of killing.

6. Pet Retention

While some of the reasons animals are surrendered to shelters are unavoidable, others can be prevented-but only if shelters are willing to work with people to help them solve their problems. Saving animals requires communities to develop innovative strategies for keeping people and their companion animals together. And the more a community sees its shelters as a place to turn for advice and assistance, the easier this job will be.

7. Medical and Behavior Programs

In order to meet its commitment to a lifesaving guarantee for all savable animals, shelters need to keep animals happy and healthy and keep animals moving through the system. To do this, shelters must put in place comprehensive vaccination, handling, cleaning, socialization, and care policies before animals get sick and rehabilitative efforts for those who come in sick, injured, unweaned, or traumatized.

8. Public Relations/Community Involvement

Increasing adoptions, maximizing donations, recruiting volunteers and partnering with community agencies comes down to one thing: increasing the shelter's exposure. And that means consistent marketing and public relations. Public relations and marketing are the foundation of all a shelter's activities and their success. To do all these things well, the shelter must be in the public eye.

9. Volunteers

Volunteers are a dedicated "army of compassion" and the backbone of a successful No Kill effort. There is never enough staff, never enough dollars to hire more staff, and always more needs than paid human resources. That is where volunteers come in and make the difference between success and failure and, for the animals, life and death.

10. Proactive Redemptions

One of the most overlooked areas for reducing killing in animal control shelters are lost animal reclaims. Sadly, besides having pet owners fill out a lost pet report, very little effort is made in this area of shelter operations. This is unfortunate because doing so-primarily shifting from passive to a more proactive approach-has proven to have a significant impact on lifesaving and allow shelters to return a large percentage of lost animals to their families.

11. A Compassionate Director

The final element of the No Kill equation is the most important of all, without which all other elements are thwarted-a hard working, compassionate animal control or shelter director not content to regurgitate tired cliches or hide behind the myth of "too many animals, not enough homes." Unfortunately, this one is also oftentimes the hardest one to demand and find.
