Adoptable Pets in Florida

Do you need to find a loving home for your pet?

No-kill shelters do wonderful work, but as a result, are often inundated with pet surrenders. In the unfortunate scenario that you have to find a new home for your pet, please read through the rehoming solution and articles on this page before contacting the shelter.

We found six baby black kittens approximately three weeks old and the mommy. We are moving tomorrow and we cannot take these beautiful kittens with us. For the past few days we have brought them inside and have fed them mommy who is still nursing her babies but I am desperate to find a place where somebody will at least take care of them and adopt them out when they are ready. I do not want to bring them to the Humane Society as I have been told they will most likely be euthanized. Can someone please get back to me if they know of anywhere or anyone who is willing to foster this mommy and her six beautiful kittens

I was wondering if you know of a chihuahua rescue in South Florida. My aunt just passed away. She has a male I think 6 or 7 or so year old white chihuahua. He is a great dog, but I cannot take him because I have an 18 year old dachshund who for some reason doesn't accept him. I had him for three weeks when she was in the hospital 6 months ago and my dog didn't ever get used to him. My husband and I feel we owe it to our 18 year old dachshund to let him live out his old age in peace. He is sweet. He did not leave my aunt's bedside until we removed him after she passed. I am desperate to find him a good home. If you have any suggestions for me or if you can take him. I have photos. You can contact me at [email protected]

WE HAD A CAT ABDUCTED WHERE I WORK. HE WAS A VERY SWEET FRIENDLY GUY. HE WAS ABOUT 1 -2 YEARS OLD? MY COWORKER WOULD TAKE HIM IN ON A DAILY BASIS TO FEED HIM AND CARE FOR HIM BUT HE WENT OUTSIDE AS WELL. ONE OF THE NEIGHBORS COMPLAINED ABOUT HIM SINCE SHE DIDN'T LIKE ANIMALS AND HAD HIM REMOVED. I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT IF HE WAS JUST DROPPED OFF OR BROUGHT TO A SHELTER AND HOW I CAN FIND THAT OUT. WE HAVE CONTACTED BROWARD ANIMAL SHELTER AND CHECK THE WEBSITE DAILY TO SEE IF HE WAS BROUGHT IN. HE WAS TAKEN FROM E.OAKLAND PARK BLVD AND NE 20TH AVE. FT LAUDERDALE FL. HE WAS ALL BLACK WITH LITTLE WHITE ON HIS CHEST, NO ID ON HIM BUT WHAT MAKES HIM DISTINGUISHABLE IS THAT HIS LEFT EAR IS CROPPED DOWN AND VERY NOTICEABLE. WE ARE HOPING TO FIND HIM SOMEHOW. DON'T KNOW WHO ELSE TO CONTACT PLEASE ADVISE. YOU CAN CALL MARY AT 954-558-5843

My mother recently passed, leaving behind two beautiful grey and white Tabby cats and they need to be re-homed. Jubi is a girl and she is the "chubby" one. Despite her weight she has no health problems. Jack is a boy and he is the skinny one. He does have a condition called chronic sinusitis. Basically he will have a sort of sneezing attack followed by some "snot" in his nose. They are about 6 years old. I have all their medical records from Aventura animal hospital. They are declawed, spayed and neutered and got check ups from their vet regularly. They are truly adorable and lovable cats. We need someone who can take them together. We don't want to split them up. Please share with anyone you think might be interested and respond to this message with any questions. Thank you.

We found a black mixed female dog roaming our neighborhood and have been sheltering her. She is sweet and young. Great for a big family. I am taking care of my mother and cannot give her the attention that she needs and am looking for someone who is willing to welcome her in their home. She obeys on command looks healthy and would be a plus to any family.

Hello all. I'm in need of desperate help. I have four kitties I need to find homes for. I've tried everything but a shelter. Not to get to personal, I have bypoler and low level atisum. Sorry for bad spelling. Anyways, I'm an adult on disability and now have to move. I can't afford to take care off all my guys and I'm getting very depressed. Now I don't take care of me. I have 7 cats, a dog and 3 rats. I'm very upset and I don't want to put them away in a shelter but no one else in my life cares to help me find my babies a home so at this point a shelter seems like my only option. I'm going to die if that's what happens to them. I would rather stay in a cage. Please email me at [email protected] if you will take a baby. I'm in pasco. Thank you for reading.

I have a kitty that is sweet and loving as can be living outside in my back yard. I think it is the young offspring of my neighbors outdoor cat who is not friendly. I have four cats of my own inside without claws and my husband won't let me have another so kitty can't come in. I feel so bad for him. I bought him a bed and feed him and pet him daily but that is all I can do for him right now. He wants so much attention that I can't give him because I am afraid he might scratch me and I have lymphadema and leukemia and can't afford an infection from a scratch. Please help me find a loving home for him. thank you

1. Feral Cat TNR Program

Many communities are embracing Trap, Neuter, Release programs (TNR) to improve animal welfare, reduce death rates, and meet obligations to public welfare.

2. High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter

Low cost, high volume spay/neuter will quickly lead to fewer animals entering the shelter system, allowing more resources to be allocated toward saving lives.

3. Rescue Groups

An adoption or transfer to a rescue group frees up scarce cage and kennel space, reduces expenses for feeding, cleaning, killing, and improves a community's rate of lifesaving. In an environment of millions of dogs and cats killed in shelters annually, rare is the circumstance in which a rescue group should be denied an animal.

4. Foster Care

Volunteer foster care is crucial to No Kill. Without it, saving lives is compromised. It is a low cost, and often no cost, way of increasing a shelter's capacity, improving public relations, increasing a shelter's public image, rehabilitating sick and injured or behaviorally challenged animals, and saving lives.

5. Comprehensive Adoption Programs

Adoptions are vital to an agency's lifesaving mission. The quantity and quality of shelter adoptions is in shelter management's hands, making lifesaving a direct function of shelter policies and practice. In fact, studies show people get their animals from shelters only 20% of the time. If shelters better promoted their animals and had adoption programs responsive to the needs of the community, including public access hours for working people, offsite adoptions, adoption incentives, and effective marketing, they could increase the number of homes available and replace killing with adoptions. Contrary to conventional wisdom, shelters can adopt their way out of killing.

6. Pet Retention

While some of the reasons animals are surrendered to shelters are unavoidable, others can be prevented-but only if shelters are willing to work with people to help them solve their problems. Saving animals requires communities to develop innovative strategies for keeping people and their companion animals together. And the more a community sees its shelters as a place to turn for advice and assistance, the easier this job will be.

7. Medical and Behavior Programs

In order to meet its commitment to a lifesaving guarantee for all savable animals, shelters need to keep animals happy and healthy and keep animals moving through the system. To do this, shelters must put in place comprehensive vaccination, handling, cleaning, socialization, and care policies before animals get sick and rehabilitative efforts for those who come in sick, injured, unweaned, or traumatized.

8. Public Relations/Community Involvement

Increasing adoptions, maximizing donations, recruiting volunteers and partnering with community agencies comes down to one thing: increasing the shelter's exposure. And that means consistent marketing and public relations. Public relations and marketing are the foundation of all a shelter's activities and their success. To do all these things well, the shelter must be in the public eye.

9. Volunteers

Volunteers are a dedicated "army of compassion" and the backbone of a successful No Kill effort. There is never enough staff, never enough dollars to hire more staff, and always more needs than paid human resources. That is where volunteers come in and make the difference between success and failure and, for the animals, life and death.

10. Proactive Redemptions

One of the most overlooked areas for reducing killing in animal control shelters are lost animal reclaims. Sadly, besides having pet owners fill out a lost pet report, very little effort is made in this area of shelter operations. This is unfortunate because doing so-primarily shifting from passive to a more proactive approach-has proven to have a significant impact on lifesaving and allow shelters to return a large percentage of lost animals to their families.

11. A Compassionate Director

The final element of the No Kill equation is the most important of all, without which all other elements are thwarted-a hard working, compassionate animal control or shelter director not content to regurgitate tired cliches or hide behind the myth of "too many animals, not enough homes." Unfortunately, this one is also oftentimes the hardest one to demand and find.
