Berkeley Animal Care Services (BACS) is one of the most progressive municipal animal shelters in California. Over ten years, the shelter has been transformed from a police run, high-kill shelter, into a model progressive shelter with the lowest euthanasia rate in California run by a civilian department. With one of the lowest euthanasia rates of any city shelter in California, our animals are kept for as long as it takes to find them an adoptive home or rescue. Only severe medical or behavioral cases are euthanized.

Berkeley's thriving volunteer program is unique to city shelters. Our many volunteers ensure that shelter life is not so dire and depressing for the animals. Once trained our volunteers are free to take our dogs out of the shelter and for a walk around Berkeley's Aquatic Park or for a play session in the city provided exercise yard complete with toys, balls, and tan bark. Shy dogs are comforted and high energy dogs are helped to find a happy ground to make them more adoptable and ready for their new homes. We take special care to provide special training for our pit bulls, a breed that most shelters either reject or are overrun with. BACS pit bulls are matched with a volunteer who then take their dog to weekly Pit Ed classes provided by Bad Rap (Bay Area Dog Loves Responsible About Pit bulls).

--------------
The Animal Shelter runs a low-cost spay/neuter program (SNYP) for the pets of residents of Berkeley and for animals adopted from the shelter. Over-population in domestic animals is an ongoing problem making it difficult to find them all good homes. The SNYP program has increased the number of animals being spayed/neutered in Berkeley thus lowering the number of animals entering the shelter as strays or surrendered by their owners/guardians.

BACKGROUND
Berkeley Humane Society is a local non-profit organization that works closely with BACS. The aforementioned shelters are committed to maintaining a no-kill status, whereby no healthy and/or treatable animals in our target communities of Berkeley,
Albany, Piedmont and Emeryville are euthanized.
