I am looking for some help in placing a dog. We have a blue-Nosed Pit approximately 2 years old that we can no longer take care of. We have had him since he was about 6 months old. He was given to us. We named him Deebo. Deebo had puppies with our Lab/Pit Princess. We have since had him neutered and has all his shots. He is due for his rabies shot in September.

Deebo’s character:

Deebo is a wonderful guard dog and is wonderful with my children and husband. He loves playing with them and loves to be loved (petted) however he has been aggressive in the past with one of our guests in our house. Since then we are afraid to allow him near our guests and to be honest I have even grown to be afraid of him. He also has not gotten out of the habit of destroying everything in site whether it’s a doggy bed, a chair, our deck anything he can chew on he does. Both of these issues have forced us to have him confined to a room.

My boys have all grown to love him dearly and this is a hard decision however we believe the smartest decision is to see if a shelter can have him adopted. We feel it is not fair to him to be confined while our other dogs are free to run around freely. We do have children and we always have guests at our house and can’t afford for him to snap at them, nonetheless have him destroy all. We thought about advertising Deebo to friends/family however just do not want to have on our chest if Deebo should snap.

We have been trying to contact several No-Kill shelters to see if and what we would have to do to drop him off. We believe shelters would do temperament testing to see what kind of home Deebo would best fit. Please let me know your feedback on our situation ior ifyou can point us in the right direction.
Sincerely,

Jose and Denise Tirado

    Jose and Denise,
Why would/should somebody else take Deebo when you yourself are afraid of him and are unwilling to let him be near your family and guests?
The temperament tests that some shelters do are simply an excuse to justify killing a dog with an aggressive attitude. (Actually, a lot of times they are administered poorly and innocent/loving dogs die needlessly.)
There are certified animal behaviorists and professional trainers who could perhaps consult with you to help you work Deebo through his *issues*...
As the legal owner of Deebo you can have him killed as a menace to society. Or you can relinquish him and let somebody else make that decision. Or, you could work to rehabilitate your own dog and place him in a loving home where he is safe, happy and understood. (Perhaps that home could be yours?!)
